We welcome two new regular writers with issue 4 – Ande Schurr, a seasoned sound recordist, and all the way from Hollywood – Mitch Santell.

Ande writes about capturing sound on location with some great tips and tricks to cover most any situation – out doors or in.

Mitch, whose family  worked on top Hollywood movies during the golden era,  has an introductory feature on the three elements of getting your next film project off the ground. Mitch, who has a strong career in media syndication, will continue his thought-provoking series looking at the business end of show business in future issues of Viewfinder. He’s the man to listen to if you are serious about making movies.

In addition to the above features, Gary Foster writes about getting those trick shots in the can – such as recording people in a car and pretending it’s moving along the street.

And Mike Atherton of the Christchurch Video Club chips in with a brilliant tutorial on the free CGI program Blender (available for all platforms from our Free Stuff page). Mike’s step-by-step guide will have you creating computer generated animated graphics in no time.

I get to interview award-winning doco maker Polly Green who has moved from the States to make movies in New Zealand, and there’s a fascinating story behind the My Movie feature.

All in all, it’s another cracker of an edition that will help you understand the movie industry a little more and help you make even better videos.

Thanks to all who contributed to this fine edition.

Cheers!

Norman Ellis-Flint Interviewed by Mitch Santell on What's Out Next!
Norman Ellis-Flint has played an important and fascinating role in the evolution and development of modern radio and radio advertising. Norman was one of the pioneers in the development of several major rock stations across the United States and then became a leader and innovator in developing some of the most powerful marketing concepts used by companies that advertised on radio.

Working as a young man in San Francisco during the famous “Summer of Love,” Norman helped develop KMPX-FM: one of the first true rock stations in America. The format Norman developed was quickly picked up by KSJO-FM in San Jose and many other stations across the United States. In less than 18 months, CBS took notice of Norman’s and his partner Lou Waters’ success and influence and brought him to New York City, to help turnaround and revitalize WCBS-FM.

Norman was later lured away from WCBS to work with John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Kharma Productions in Toronto, Canada. Norman was hired to be their Director of Creative and Media Relations. It was here that Norman gained so much of his in-depth understanding of business, marketing and advertising.
